VW California T7 vs T6.1: What Changed with the Accessories?

You've just switched from a T6.1 to the new T7 California – or you're planning to. Congratulations, beautiful van. Now comes the next question: Which accessories do you bring along, and what do you need to buy new?

We've sorted through the most common questions here. No fluff, just the practical stuff.

What's technically different on the T7?

The VW California T7 is based on a new platform (MQB) and differs from the T6.1 in several areas:

  • Body geometry has changed – interior panels, rail heights, roof profile
  • Table system is not backwards compatible – the famous T6.1 table system with California bracket no longer fits in the T7
  • C-rail and roof rails have different spacings
  • Rear cutout is a different size – important for rear drawers and anti-slip mats

Sounds like a lot. In everyday use, you'll notice it most when it comes to fit.

What still works?

Good news first. Universal products – meaning everything that's not vehicle-specific – will of course continue to work:

  • Load straps (040 Parts load strap 100cm, 4-piece set) – fit everywhere, do what they should
  • Tool holders – metal, rubber, no vehicle reference, always compatible
  • Multitool / tailgate prop – the 040 Parts multitool (20cm, with hex key 6–19mm, angle finder, bottle opener) fits VW T4 to T7

What needs to be repurchased for the T7?

Rear drawer and anti-slip mat

This is the most common question. The T7 California Beach and Tour have a rear drawer with different dimensions than T5/T6/T6.1. The anti-slip mat for T7 is sized at 950mm (907 x 950 mm), while the T6/T6.1 Comfortline/Ocean/Coast runs with 750mm drawer (930 x 755 mm).

If you're upgrading from T6.1: your old anti-slip mat no longer fits. Order new, specifically matched to the T7 drawer.

Table extension

The table extension set (40-piece) was developed specifically for T5, T6, and T6.1. The T7 has a different table bracket – this set won't work there. If you want to extend the California table, you'll need to wait for a T7-compatible solution or contact us directly.

Molle board and rail mounting

The Molle board is compatible with Reimo Multirail and Brandrup Top-Rail. These systems also exist for the T7 – but whether your specific rail setup works with the Molle board depends on the variant. When in doubt: send us a photo, we'll check it.

Stove inserts

The 040 Parts stove inserts (center, for T5/T6/T6.1) are precision-milled to fit the California stove of these generations. The T7 has a different cooktop layout – be careful here and look for T7-specific variants.

Roof rack: T7 is covered

Good news for roof rack fans: The 040 Parts roof rack foot is universally designed and fits VW T7, T5, T6, and T6.1 California as well as Transporter and Multivan with C-rail. Adjustable angle, 3mm galvanized steel, black matte powder coated. You don't need to buy anything new here.

Conclusion

The T7 is a different car than the T6.1. Sounds obvious, but with accessories, this becomes more concrete than expected. You keep the universal products, you order new fit-specific ones. No drama – but a check before your next trip is worth it.
