MOLLE System Explained: What Is It and Why Does Your Van Need One?
You've probably heard the word "MOLLE" but don't really know what it's all about? No stress – you're not alone in this. Quick explanation, and you'll immediately understand why this thing is so relevant for your van.
What Is the MOLLE System Anyway?
MOLLE stands for Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment – a system the US military introduced in the late 90s. The idea behind it is simple: A row of loops (the so-called PALS grid – Pouch Attachment Ladder System) on a sturdy plate, into which you can clip pouches, holders, bags, and accessories directly. No drilling, no screwing, no improvising with velcro.
Why did the military build something like this? Because soldiers need to reconfigure their gear quickly. And that's exactly what you want – just for your bus.
From the Army to the California
What hangs on a soldier's backpack today hangs on the sliding door area of your T5, T6, T6.1 or T7 California. The principle remains the same: A robust plate with a regular grid of loops, to which you attach modular accessories.
The 040 Parts MOLLE Board mounts in your van using the existing rails – depending on the mounting option, either via the Reimo Multirail, the Brandrup Top-Rail, or directly to the C-rail of your California. No welding, no vehicle modifications, everything is reversible.
Important to know: If you mount the board all the way back on the C-rail, the sliding door won't open fully anymore. So if you're regularly loading large items from the side, better to position it further forward.
What Can You Hang on It?
That's actually the best question. The MOLLE standard is so widespread that you can scour the market for compatible accessories – from:
- Tool holders (040 Parts Metal Tool Holder Black, ideal for Allen keys & Co.)
- Wheel chocks and sand mats – we have special screw brackets for these that securely fix offroad gear
- Straps and nets for bags and backpacks
- Water bottle holsters, light strips, cameras
And the best part: You can reconfigure the setup anytime. Weekend surfing? Put in wetsuit hooks. Climbing trip? Rope bag holder. Workshop day? Tools within reach.
Which 040 Parts Accessories Fit the MOLLE Board?
We've developed the Plus Screw Fitting Set for Airline Rails (M8 x 60 mm, 1000 daN) for this – four fittings with 1000 daN breaking load. That sounds like a lot, and it is. Heavy camping gear, jerry cans, highline kit – no problem. Installation: quick, uncomplicated, removable again without leaving marks.
040 HACK: Combination of MOLLE Board + screw bracket for wheel chocks = your sand mat holder that won't come loose even on gravel tracks. Just try it.
T5, T6, T6.1 – Does All of This Fit?
Yes. The MOLLE Board is compatible with VW T5, T6 and T6.1 California models. For the T7 California, we recommend checking with us directly – the mounting geometry has changed, and we have precise-fit solutions available.
If you're unsure whether your rail system is compatible (Reimo, Brandrup, or custom builds): just send us a photo. We'll take a look and tell you what fits.
Is the MOLLE Board Really Worth It?
Sure, you could also somehow fix accessories with velcro or cable ties in the van. People do. Sometimes it works. But if you're on the road frequently and know that your gear needs change depending on the trip, a real MOLLE system is the more honest solution. No fiddling, no rattling, no "somewhere it came loose."
The investment pays off quickly when you realize you don't have to re-equip the van before every trip – just swap the setup in five minutes.
Conclusion
The MOLLE system isn't military nerd stuff. It's a well-thought-out modular system that fits just as well in your bus as on a combat backpack. Flexible, sturdy, no drilling hole chaos. And with the right 040 Parts products, installation isn't an afternoon project – it's a fifteen-minute job with an Allen key.
